Tippi
Tippi (Yvonne Tipping) was born and brought up on the outskirts of Glasgow. She took up music in her early teens, and quickly learned to play guitar and drums. After Tippi left school, she studied music at Strathclyde University and graduated with an Honours degree in Applied Music.
Tippi’s musical influences are vast, taking in country, rock and punk and jazz artists such as Neil Young, The Clash, Kurt Elling and Paul Weller. She even got to tour Ireland with Weller, performing a duet with him every night during his encores. They sang John Martyn’s “May You Never,” which was a very big moment in Tippi’s career.
Tippi has also supported Iggy Pop, James Taylor, Tom Jones, Lionel Ritchie and Joe Walsh of The Eagles to name but a few. She also travelled to New York to write with Ben Taylor, James Taylor’s son.
Tippi kicked off her career by releasing two singles on her own label. Both singles sold out their original pressings, entering the Scottish top 20 charts along the way. The latter release actually entered the official UK singles independent chart at number 16.
Tippi is a consummate live performer in all situations—solo acoustic, fronting her solo backing band, or serving as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist with the all-female, Glasgow-based rockers The Hedrons. Tippi has toured extensively and has performed in a wide variety of venues, including large outdoor festivals such as T In The Park, Isle of Wight, Download, and the Quebec Music Festival. The Hedrons supported the reformed Alice in Chains in London, toured California with Social Distortion, and served as the support act for the Sex Pistols at a memorable hometown gig at Glasgow’s SECC. The Hedrons did numerous UK/Ireland tours, toured Germany, and managed three US tours in one year, covering New York to Chicago, Kentucky to San Diego.
Tippi has performed at the famed Austin, Texas music festival South by Southwest (SXSW) as both a solo artist and as lead singer of The Hedrons.
Tippi’s eponymous debut album was released toward the end of 2004 to critical acclaim. The single “Boy” received strong airplay both nationally and regionally.
After that initial solo success, Tippi then put together The Hedrons. On her experiences with The Hedrons, Tippi said, “Recording and touring with the girls has been the best joyride ever.”
The Hedrons’ first single, “Be My Friend,” was released in July 2006 on the Scottish indie label Measured Records. It entered the official UK charts as a Top 20 indie single, and it sold out its limited-edition vinyl pressing. The second single, “I Need You,” which was released in October 2006, got to number 5 in the UK indie singles chart. “Heatseeker,” the third single, debuted in January 2007 and also got into the top five of the UK indie singles chart. The Hedrons’ debut album, One More Won’t Kill Us, received a February 2007 release and achieved a Top 40 placing in the UK indie album chart.

Tippi has worked extensively as a session backing vocalist.

Music education has always been a huge part of Tippi's life and currently she is a lecturer of music at New College Lanarkshire.
